Abby receives a new book each month from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. If a library in your area participates you should check it out, or follow the link below to find more information. It is free to join and your child can receive a new book in the mail each month from birth to age five. Abby is always excited to get a new book in the mail and she has accumulated lots of great books.
As a teenager I was a voracious reader, but my love of books began early. My mother would read to my sister and I often. I could sit down next to a shelf full of books and keep myself occupied for hours as a small child.
Last Sunday we spent the day at my parents’ house. I braved the dusty attic and scary spiders to find a large tub which contained books from my childhood. I packed the books to bring home and we brought them out tonight.
It was great fun to go through the boxes and look at all of my old books. Some of them are in great condition for being over thirty years old and being stored in the attic for so long. Others hadn’t faired so well. Many are well-worn and well-loved. Some had been torn, some drawn in by little hands, others have been read so many times that they began falling apart long ago.
Abby and I read at least ten of them: The Three Little Pigs, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Mickey Mouse and the Neat Robot, and others. I am so happy that my mother saved all of them so that I could share them with my children. I can’t wait to introduce her to Frog and Toad, Little Bear, Frances the badger, the Cat in the Hat, and so many other of my first friends.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program sends books to participating areas in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. For more information, visit: https://imaginationlibrary.com/
