When I look back on each day, the one thing I see that I skimp on more than anything is self-care. I take care of the needs of others and often neglect caring for myself.
I don’t take enough time to relax. I don’t get enough sleep. I don’t eat a healthy enough diet. I don’t exercise as much as I need to. I don’t take the time to do the normal everyday little things like use body lotion for my dry skin or shave my legs every other day. Actual pampering never happens (unless you’re talking about changing Pampers diapers!)
Why? There are several reasons.
Lack of time is probably the biggest factor. I try to make the most of my time when the kids are sleeping, so often that means I am blogging, doing chores around the house, preparing for the next day, or spending an hour or so watching TV with my husband.
Not making self-care a priority is another reason. I get caught up in making sure that everyone else’s needs are met first and my own tends to fall by the wayside.
Interruptions suck. I can’t get a shower or use the toilet each day without interruptions, so taking the time to finally use that face mask I received for Christmas or paint my toenails seems not worth the effort and the hassle of trying to accomplish quickly or half-ass to get done so I can take care of whatever I was interrupted for.
Taking time for myself sometimes makes me feel guilty. I hate to say it but the list of things needing attention at home can feel more important and if I stop to take time for myself I catch myself feeling selfish.
Today I had an appointment with the Red Cross to donate blood, so while I was waiting and donating I was browsing Amazon and found several things that look amazing and make me want to buy to treat myself. I created a self-care wishlist on Amazon and would like to share the list with you. I also created a non-material self-care wishlist, which I will share first.
My self-care Wishlist
- Twenty minutes alone and a hot cup of coffee with hazelnut creamer before the rest of my family wakes in the morning
- An afternoon on a blanket in the park reading a good book
- A long soak in the bathtub
- A regular lengthy meandering walk like I used to take daily
- Uninterrupted bathroom breaks
- A back and foot massage
- A class to make a fused glass project at the local pottery store
- Time to exercise each day
- A snuggle nap with both of my kids (one where they both actually are still, quiet, and sleep)
- Creative time to work on building my portfolio for my fall art show
- A nice day to drive with the windows down and listen to good music

With 642 five-star reviews, this oil seems to be a product that does it all, from moisturizing skin, improving hair and nails, removing makeup, or adding to foundation for a dewey effect. I’m buying this in my next Amazon order.
The name caught my eye, but the description sounds great: “journal your way through positive affirmations and cathartic-as-f*ck activities on your liberating journey toward something pretty close to happiness.” Who couldn’t use that in their life?
These pajamas look very comfortable and not frumpy like a lot of comfy pajamas are. I always get hot while I sleep and my husband is the exact opposite, so a satin pajama set like this would be very helpful to keep me cool at night.
I need a new bathrobe. My current one is made from a satin-like material and says “Bride” on the back. It has been a nice robe but is now becoming tattered. This one looks like the perfect length and fabric to be comfortable.
I have read so many fantastic reviews of these vitamins on different blogs and in several magazines. Since giving birth to my son I have lost a ton of hair. I thought it would go back to normal after I stopped breastfeeding, but my locks are still skimpy. I would really like new hair to fill in around my face where it is very noticeably thin.
Last year my sister and I went to a nail salon in the mall for my first pedicure. It was so nice and relaxing to feel the warm bubbling water on my feet and ankles. I can’t justify to myself the cost for pedicures, but I am seriously considering buying this foot spa to get the salon pedicure experience at home anytime I want.
This foot soak would be awesome in the foot spa or bathtub. I love tea tree oil and mint- this sounds very refreshing.
A long relaxing soak in a bathtub full of warm water and lavender bath salt sounds heavenly!
I had never seen a full body bath pillow before I stumbled upon this one. I have tried a head/neck pillow for the bath, but this pillow looks like it would make an already wonderful bath even more fabulous.
Have you tried any of these products? What is on your self-care wishlist? What do you do for self-care?
