Life Goes Full Circle

When looking at Netflix or Amazon Prime, one can see many new versions of cartoons that I loved as a kid: The Popples, The Care Bears, My Little Pony, Inspector Gadget, Garfield, and others. I don’t care for the newer cartoons, but my kids love them.

We play many games that I had as a child, like Trouble, Candy Land, Memory, Chutes and Ladders, and Hi Ho Cherry-O.

Some people say that companies just revamp previously popular fashion, TV shows, movies, games, and toys instead of coming up with new ideas. Some say that history repeats itself. I tend to think that lots of things come full circle.

Case in point, the other night I was putting Abby to bed and I spotted something greenish brown, dry, and crusty on the wall. I had my suspicions about what it was.

“Abby, is that a booger on the wall?”

“Yep, but Daddy already told me I am in trouble for it so it’s OK,” she said

“It is not OK. How did it get there? And why didn’t he clean it off?”

She rolled her eyes and sighed in that infuriating way that threenagers do. “I wiped it there.”

“We don’t do that! You have Kleenexes next to your bed! Why did you do that?”

“‘Cause I needed to blow my nose in the middle of the night.”

Flash back to sometime around 1986. I remember this very clearly, because I didn’t really get into trouble very often. Imagine three-year-old me lying on a bed covered in Care Bear sheets. I resemble my daughter very much, except at this point in time I had a mullet hairstyle.

My mom comes in the room to kiss me goodnight, then gets angry. “Sarah, are those boogers on the wall?!” She asks, incredulously. Gross, I know. Hey, I was three-ish.

“Um, yes?” My grossed out mom made me clean the wall (which wasn’t that easy) and swear that I will always use a tissue from now on and never wipe boogers on the wall.

Fast forward to 2019 again. I call my mom and tell her about Abby’s booger incident. She just laughs. And laughs. And laughs. Full circle.
