Book Review: Baby Loves The Five Senses: Sight! And Baby Loves The Five Senses: Hearing!

Charlesbridge kindly sent me a copy of two recently published books in their Baby Loves Science series, Baby Loves The Five Senses: Sight! and Baby Loves The Five Senses: Hearing! Both books are written by Ruth Spiro and illustrated by Irene Chan.

At first glance, seeing that these were board books, I wasn’t sure that they would appeal to both of my children, as my daughter Abby is 4-years-old and in preschool and my son Oscar is 2-years-old. Although not ready for chapter books, my daughter loves to read longer stories. My son is currently more interested in picture board books and enjoys reading them over and over. Once we began to read, I realized that my assumption was incorrect; each book had qualities that interested both kids. I should remember to not judge a book by its cover, right?

Baby Loves The Five Senses: Sight! And Baby Loves The Five Senses: Hearing! are both full of bright and colorful illustrations and explanations of how the senses sight and hearing works, told in simple and easy to understand language.

My ever-curious daughter has asked me, “Mom, what makes a rainbow?” and “Why does Papa John not hear in one ear?” which were difficult questions for me to answer. Spiro and Chan’s text and illustrations made it simple to show my daughter how a rainbow is created and how our ears function, in a way that was easy for her to understand.

I like that these books introduce natural and biological processes to young children in uncomplicated terms. I think it is great to teach children about science at an early age, since they are naturally curious about the world around us. As a parent I like that it introduces them to the concept of being hearing impaired or visually impaired and how different technologies like Braille, reading glasses, cochlear implants and hearing aids, or sign language are used.
