6 Important Lessons to Remember Each Day

Just about any way you cut it, the fact is, life is short.

We have a very limited time here on Earth, and many people waste it chasing material objects, trying to fill a void within themselves, or trying to quiet a nagging voice at the back of their mind.

In the grand scheme of things, we as human beings, are just a teeny tiny, minuscule, incredibly small part of the universe and we tend to overestimate our importance therein. We attempt to assert some sort of purpose into our being and life, desperate to find a meaning, a reason, an explanation for being.

I think to just be is enough.

We can just be and be grateful to be.

We can live fulfilling lives that are not cluttered with things.

We can live and love and make the most of our momentary time on this big hunk of rock moving through space.

I don’t profess to be a sage, to be wise, or know more than the next person. I have tried to live and learn and gain experience along the way, fall down and get back up. There are several lessons that I have learned and try to live by each day.

6 important lessons

Never stop learning

Learning and evolving as an individual is a life-long gift. Never throw away an opportunity to learn something new or grow.

“Knowledge, like air, is vital to life. Like air, no one should be denied it.” ―Alan Moore

It is hard to not be so serious all of the time. Our society has built so many artificial “needs” and “requirements,” that we stress ourselves out chasing them, trying to comply with them, or trying to conform to them. Balance it out with a hefty daily dose of laughter and gaiety. Laughter is good for your body, your mental health, and your soul.

Express your gratitude

I think expressing your gratitude is always a welcome gesture and always appreciated. Many people think that sending thank you notes are an antiquated custom in this day and age, but I like to send them to let others know just how much their thought or kindness is appreciated. If you are a religious person, pray and give thanks. Or, like me, make an effort to take a moment each day to send your thankfulness for all of your blessings out into the universe.

Always say ‘I love you’

You rarely know when you will see someone for the last time. I believe in telling those who are important to you how much you love and care for them each day.

Be kind

Kindness costs nothing and is rewarding in so many ways. The kindness we show others comes back to us in one way or another.

Be quiet

Spend a few moments each day in quiet reflection. Look inward to get to know yourself. Be still and feel the Earth around you. Think about your place in this world and what you can do to make it a better place.

Good ideas for sure. Your ‘Be Quiet’ one is especially important in a world where we constantly get pulled to go faster, farther, higher, more.

Last week, I attended a “mindfulness in the museum” session in our local Hood Museum and the guru talked a lot about being mindful and quiet. One habit he shared was to use any bell (church bell, etc) as a moment to stop, and take one deep mindful breath. Just one, but it will create space and quiet in your life. I have found myself starting to do it when one of the phones around me pings for “you have a new message or something else ‘important'” and it is amazing how good it feels to just pause and breath.
